The elevation of McCloud is approximately 3,200 feet above sea level. Mount Shasta Ski Park Area is 8 miles northwest. Lake Shasta is 37 miles south and the Oregon border is 70 miles north via interstate 5. Highway 89 passes McCloud's southern boundary in an east / west direction allowing a shortcut to Reno.

McCloud is a full service community with a population of approximately 1,600 people, elementary and high schools, churches of different denominations, gas stations, grocery store, several bed & breakfast inns, cafes, restaurants, small retail stores, antique shop, video store, ceramic supply shop, large park with two baseball fields; one with lights, a dinner train, a riding club and a nine hole golf course. The recreational activities are numerous and diverse. The sole owner was the McCloud Lumber Company until 1965 at which time the mill houses were sold and a service district was formed.
